The Arts

"There is a logical connection between Arts and Community; even more, there is a huge opportunity to integrate creativity in the process of bringing about real transformation." Thus, Bill Cleveland began a conversation to explore the role of the Arts in building Earth Community.

The conversation continued: "The level of success of community development programs and processes is highly increased (or diminished) by the presence (or absence) of creative arts/cultural elements. Art can be provocative, conveying stoires that people don't want to hear, causing a reaction; other stories have appeal, such that people want to hear more.

How do we integrate Arts and Creativity into our consciousness?

1. Learn about/understand cultural context and map out a plan
2. Tap into expertise in this area for leadership re how cultural elements contribute to the formation of our world views.
3. Explore ways to engage communities in constructing their own stories; consider Content, Process and Product"

Bill co-authored a paper with Patricia Shifferd - The Role of Arts in a Time of Change, which provides deep insight into the role and value of integrating arts in the building of community and bridging the gap often found between the arts community and sustainability activists. "This paper stems from the findings of a research project which invited a range of writers, artists, politicians, scientists, community leaders, theologians and social theorists to engage the following question: If a major shift in worldview is taking place, what role might society's arts and cultural resources (artists, arts institutions, and cultural creatives) play?"
